In All Kinds of Weather: Gator Football

imageYesterday we made the trek up to Gainesville to watch the season opener against Idaho! It was a 7pm game so we did not leave Orlando until about 2:30. Usually we have a pretty big tailgate group for the games, but this week was pretty low key. The sun was shining BRIGHT making it a million degrees for tailgate. My little buddy Mary Adele came to the game wearing her adorable Gator Cheerleading dress!

seriously she wins for cutest gator fan!

After tailgating for a while we made our way to the swamp. Now, I have been to games in many stadiums but nothing in the world compares to walking into the swamp! The sea of orange and blue greats you and the fans are always PUMPED and ready to go! Once we made it to our seats we learned there was a 30 minutes weather delay for lightning. Looking at the sky it was sunny over half the stadium, and dark over the other.

not looking too bad!

We stayed in our seats as it started to sprinkle…but then the thunder started and we decided we would rather be safe and not sitting in metal seats at the top of the stadium. We moved “inside” under the upper half of the stadium to wait it out.

From this vantage point we were “treated” to quite the lightning show. Seriously, I have lived in Florida for a long time and I have never seen lightning like this! It lit up the whole sky in big flashes, followed by intense strikes. I love this picture from twitter last night…

Dad and I had secured a pretty sweet spot along the wall…it took about an hour of waiting before I caved and sat down (#whiteshortsproblems)

The storms continued and pretty soon it was DOWNPOURING. We had already decided we were going to head home, but we were trapped. We couldn’t even begin to navigate to the car because it was raining so much (plus we had to walk down the ramp). The tweets on twitter were saying after each lightning strike it was a 50 minute delay. At this point we were looking at a 9:50 pm kickoff…and we had no where to sleep but in orlando.

As I wandered over to snap this picture a group of girls were coming in from the rain. They took one look at me and said “photo-5

We finally made a run for it in the pouring rain and lightning. Once we got to the car and began driving they announced a kickoff time. (just our luck) The Gators got to play a solid TEN SECONDS before more lightning was spotted. Ultimately the game was cancelled. In my 24 years as a Gator Fan I have never seen this happen…hoping this is a sign for a pretty epic season!
